On the morning of 15th December 2025, an inspiring journey began in Dagbana Layout, Jikwoyi, Abuja. What appeared to be a simple community gathering quickly became a powerful learning experience, especially for young children from primary school age, who were introduced to a new way of thinking about their environment, their skills, and their future.
The Tanmide Green Cycle Foundation hosted a two day practical training titled Turning Waste into Wealth, carefully designed to nurture young minds and guide them toward self reliance, creativity, and environmental responsibility. From the very start, the atmosphere was filled with excitement, curiosity, and youthful energy. The children arrived eager to learn, and by the end of the program, they left inspired and empowered.
Throughout the training, waste materials such as plastic bottles, paper scraps, metal pieces, and organic waste were transformed into tools for learning and innovation. What the children once saw as rubbish suddenly became valuable resources. Through engaging demonstrations, simple explanations, and hands on activities, the facilitators showed the pupils that waste does not mean useless. Instead, it can be the starting point of something meaningful and profitable.

The sessions were intentionally child friendly, interactive, and practical. The young participants were guided step by step on how discarded materials could be reused, repurposed, and even turned into items that can be sold or used daily. More importantly, they were taught the mindset of value creation. They learned that wealth is not only about money but about skills, ideas, and the ability to solve problems.
The facilitators shared relatable stories of young people and communities who turned waste management into small businesses and sustainable livelihoods. These stories helped the children understand that age is not a limitation and that even simple actions can lead to big opportunities. The message was clear and memorable. With creativity and responsibility, anyone can turn challenges into solutions.
The first day focused on awareness. The children learned how poor waste management affects health, the environment, and the community. These lessons were delivered in a positive and encouraging way, helping them understand their role as young environmental ambassadors rather than making them feel overwhelmed.
By the second day, learning turned into action. The children worked in groups, experimented with materials, and proudly created useful and creative items from waste. Smiles, laughter, and excitement filled the space as confidence grew with every activity. It was learning by doing at its best.

What made the training truly impactful was its focus on building self reliance from a young age. The children were not only taught how to recycle but also how to think independently, work as a team, and believe in their ability to create value with their hands and minds.

As the program concluded on 16th December 2025, there was a visible change in perspective. The children no longer saw their surroundings the same way. Waste bins, streets, and open spaces became places of opportunity and learning. Parents and community members also witnessed how practical education can shape responsible and innovative young citizens.

Turning Waste into Wealth was more than a training program. It was a foundation for lifelong skills, environmental awareness, and entrepreneurial thinking among young learners. Through this initiative in Dagbana Layout, Jikwoyi, Abuja, the Tanmide Green Cycle Foundation demonstrated that when children are taught early to see value in what others discard, they grow into adults who can build solutions, protect the environment, and create a sustainable future.
Sometimes, the greatest lessons and opportunities are found in the simplest things we choose to throw away.
